GST registration is a process where businesses that are involved in the sale and purchase of goods and services register for GST. Every business entity with turnover crossing the threshold limit of INR 40 lacs (for goods) or INR 20 lacs (for services) are required to have a GST registration.

Apart from these, any business involved in the interstate supply of goods or anyone who makes taxable supplies on behalf of someone needs to get a GST registration. Generally, GST registration is mandatory for most businesses, and the process takes 2-6 days. Not registering under GST is an offence that can lead to penalties.

Who Should Register for GST?


Businesses experiencing turnover of more than 40 lakhs INR in a year must register for GST. However, for the hill and north-eastern states, the threshold is as low as 10 lakh INR. Further, the listed individuals must register for GST:

An individual with taxability under reverse charge.

An aggregator that supplies services under a specific brand name.

Anyone involved in inter-state supply of taxable goods and services.

A non-resident and casual taxable individual.

A person supplying goods or services on behalf of a taxpayer.

What is GST Registration number

GST Registration number


GST registration number is a 15-digit identification number. The taxpayer is allocated the number as per the PAN number and state of residence of the applicant. The first two digits in the GST registration number represent state code, and it is followed by a 10 digit PAN number of the applicant. After it, one digit represents entity code, one digit is left blank, and the last digit is a check digit.

The latest notification from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customers clarifies that suppliers of certain goods do not need to register their business for GST if their yearly business turnover does not cross the amount of 40 lakh INR. The best you can do in this case is to always keep the documents handy that you may need in future or even now if your turnover crosses 40 lakh INR or if you supply goods from the taxable category.

GST registration certificate is a document that proves the validation of registration under GST in India. The GST registration certificate is issued to every taxpayer on successful registration and a PDF copy is shared. Government does not issue a physical certificate for GST.

If any GST-eligible individual/business does not register under GST, then in compliance with the rules, a penalty of INR 10000 or the amount of tax evaded (whichever is higher) is applicable.

If you have applied for GST registration on the government portal, it will probably take about seven working days for allotment of provisional GSTIN and about 10 working days for final GSTIN with GST registration certificate. Launch the GST portal in your web browser and select: Services -> Registration -> Track Application Status
