What is UAN Number & How to Activate UAN?

A UAN (Universal Account Number) is a unique number given to all employees. An employer can certify an employee through his / her UAN when the KYC document is verified. UAN provides an online facility to the employee, based on this facility, the employer will not be able to deduct or withdraw his PF. In other words; UAN is important because the entire process related to Employee Provident Fund (EPF) services is now conducted online and withdrawing your PF account services like UAN, EPF balance is easy without the help of employers and PF loan applications.

# What is the UAN Number?

The UAN or Universal Account Number is a unique 12-digit number allocated to each member of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) which helps him to control all his EPF accounts. It is generated and allocated by the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) and certified by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Government of India. UAN will be linked to an employee and will connect all his or her PF (Provident Fund) accounts across organizations. This UAN becomes a member’s identity until his retirement.

# How to Check UAN Number? 

There are two ways in which you can find out the UAN number.

1. Checking your UAN with your employer:- Generally, you are allotted a universal account number(UAN) by your employer as per EPFO. Some employers also print the UAN number right on the payslip. If for some reason, you do not have a record of it, your UAN number is printed on your salary slip from the time your company deducts your salary towards PF contribution. This is the most common protocol followed by Indian companies.

2. Finding your UAN on the website:- If you are unable to get your universal account number from the employer, you can also get it through the UAN portal. You need to follow the steps given below:

Step 1:- Go to the UAN Portal https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/

Step 2: Click on the tab ‘Know your UAN status’.

Step 3: Select your state and EPFO office from the dropdown menu and enter your PF number/member ID along with the other details such as name, date of birth, mobile no, and captcha code. You can get your PF number/member ID from your salary slip. Enter the tab ‘Get Authorization Pin’.

Step 4: You will receive a PIN on your mobile number. Enter the PIN and click on the valid OTP and get the UAN button.

Step 5: Your Universal Account Number will be sent to your mobile number.

# How to Check PF Balance with UAN Number?

Generally, employers give you the status of your PF balance at the end of each financial year. However, if you ever want to check your PF balance on a monthly basis, then you can do that at your convenience using your UAN number via any of these 4 ways.

1. Check your EPF balance on the EPFO portal

EPFO members can check their balance by visiting the official website of the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). Follow the steps given below to check your EPF balance online at EPFO Portal:

  • Go to the official EPFO Website (copy this in a new tab – www.epfindia.gov.in)

  • After the ‘Our Services’ drop-down menu, click on ‘For Employees’

  • After that, the ‘Services’ menu, click on ‘Member Passbook’ (You will be redirected to the login page where you can directly visit the page by clicking on this link: EPF India – Member Passbook)

  • Log in with your UAN and Password

  • After logging in, you will find Member IDs of all the accounts linked with your UAN 

  • Click on the Member ID of the EPF account for which you want to check the balance.

2. Use the SMS facility to check your EPF balance

Send EPFOHO UAN a message on 7738299899. Once the message is successfully sent to you, keep selecting the option and reply based on the messages you have received and within minutes you will get your balance via SMS.

3.  Check EPF balance with a missed call facility

You can give a missed call on  011-22901406 from your registered mobile number and you will receive an SMS with the balance details.

4. Check EPF balance on UMANG app

EPFO provides various services through the government’s centralized mobile app that is called Umang. You can check your EPF balance and just get your PF passbook on the Umang app using your UAN and OTP. Steps to check EPF balance using Umang app:

  • Install the application from Play Store/App Store or directly by clicking on this link: Umang App (Link will open in new tab).

  • Open the Umang app on your smartphone and choose your preferred language. Also, read the terms and conditions of the “End to End License Agreement”.

  • Click on the ‘All Services’ option at the bottom.

  • Find and select ‘EPFO’ from the list of options.

  • Click on ‘View Passbook‘ to check your EPF balance.
  • Enter your UAN and click on Get OTP. Enter the OTP and click on ‘submit’. (You will get OTP on your registered mobile number).

  • Now select the organization, here you will get all details of your EPF account including the contributed amount by you and the employer.

  • Your passbook will be displayed on the screen along with your EPF balance.

  • You can also download this complete details file by using the Download button at the end of the passbook page.

# Why is a UAN Needed?

As a salaried individual in a company that deducts and contributes to an Employee Provident Fund, you will be allotted a UAN number. This was not the case earlier when you were allocated multiple member IDs for each PF account started by different employers. The UAN mandate was brought by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 October 2014 to create an umbrella under which all your PF accounts can be easily accessed by you. 

# How to Generate a UAN Number?

During your first job, Your employer will ask you for a few documents to generate a UAN number. It is a one-time process. Once generated the number remains unchanged. It stays with you during your entire employment years. Here are the documents required to generate a UAN number:

  • Bank account info – Account number, branch name, and IFSC code

  • ID proof –  passport, Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Driving license, etc.

  • Address proof – Photo ID card, Ration card, etc.

  • PAN card – Your PAN should be linked to the UAN.

  • Aadhaar card – Since Aadhaar is linked to a bank account and mobile number, it is mandatory. 

  • ESIC card, if you have an account

# How to Activate UAN Number?

Once your UAN number is generated, you will have to activate your UAN account by following the steps given below:

  • Go to the official UAN portal and click on activate UAN

  • On the page shown, activate the UAN using the generated UAN, PAN, and Aadhaar number.

  • Next, enter your details and your mobile number.

  • A verification pin will be sent to your number. Enter the same and click on Authorise and Activate.

You can also activate your UAN number through the EPFO App. You need to download the UMANG App (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) which has UAN services among the other 213 government services.

Another way to activate UAN is by sending an SMS. Simply SMS EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899. After this request,  you will receive messages, and you will have to reply based on the accepted options. Within a few minutes, you will be notified about the UAN activation status.

# Facilities available on UAN portal

These facilities available on the portal are as follows:

  • Download UAN card

  • Viewing and downloading the UAN passbook

  • Get a list of all IDs (current and previous)

  • Update KYC anytime

  • Check eligibility online

  • Edit personal details

  • Link UAN and Aadhaar, if not already or offline

  • Request to claim PF transfer, withdrawal, and partial withdrawal.

# How to link Aadhaar with UAN?

The Indian government has made it mandatory to link Aadhar & UAN numbers. If you have not yet linked your Aadhar with your UAN number from the time of your generation, you can do it now. To link Aadhaar and UAN online or offline, just follow the following simple steps:

  • Offline: EPFO ​​provides an Aadhaar linking application form which you will need to fill with your Aadhaar and UAN number. You will also have to attach a hard copy of the form along with your details and self-attested copies of your PAN, Aadhaar, and UAN card. Subsequently, submit all the documents to the EPFO ​​center or CSC (Common Service Center). Once the information is verified and registered, the UAN will be linked with Aadhaar, and you will be informed about the same.

  • Online: To link Aadhaar and UAN online, you have to enter your UAN number and mobile number to generate OTP. After providing the OTP, enter the Aadhaar number and specify the gender. Choose the OTP Validation step to successfully create and verify Aadhaar. Then, click on the submit button. UAN and Aadhaar will be linked within 15 days.
